Choose a Spot For Wee-Pads
You don’t necessarily need to invest in these before bringing your dog home as they are by nature very simple to get hold of and install – but you should carefully think through where you’re going to put them ahead of time. You want them to go somewhere easily accessible for the dog to use them and for you to be able to pick them up, but avoid putting them somewhere like the middle of the floor where they can create a trip hazard as well as being unsightly and odorous. It’s important to pick the right place for them as you’ll want to make that the permanent location, to avoid confusing the dog.
Installing a Pet Door
Even if you’re going to be home a lot of the time, giving a pet their own way in and out of the house can be so helpful. Firstly you won’t need to take your dog outside every single time they get a bot curious or need the bathroom, and secondly if they need to run around outside of their daily walks, you won’t have to let them in and out. Installing pet doors needs to be thought through however, firstly, you need to make sure you buy the right size pet door for your dog breed. One appropriate for a chihuahua won’t cut it for a tibetan mastiff. Secondly, make sure you have an appropriate door to fit it to; don’t install it in the front door that runs out straight onto the road. The doggy door should just go into your yard, or at most a quiet street if your dog is well trained enough not to stray.
Getting a Timed Feeder
Even if it’s just something you do for holidays, one of the best things you can invest in is a timed feeder for your dog. This contains a lot of kibble in its dispenser, and releases a portion at preset times each day. This is a great tool if you’re planning to pop out of town for the weekend as you simply need to find a walker rather than a dogsitter, and it’s also a great tool if you and your family live a busy lifestyle. Feeding rotas have the best of intentions, but it’s inevitable that at some point everybody will think that somebody else fed the dog when the poor thing hasn’t actually had any dinner!
So ahead of getting your new furry friend back through the door, make sure you’ve done everything you can to prepare your home to give them a comfortable, happy life as a new member of your family.
