Knowing how to shut the water off in your home is an important thing to know. You never know when there could be an emergency where you need to shut the water off right away. This is why every home has an emergency shut off valve.
When Do I Need to Shut the Water Off?
First, what are some reasons you may need to shut the water off? It could be because of a pipe burst, a backed-up sewer drain, flooding, or pretty much any time excessive amounts of water enter your home. Shutting off the water supply as soon as possible can help you prevent an even bigger disaster.
Where Can I Find the Shut Off Valve?
Does your home have a basement? If so, your shut off valve is most likely going to be there near the front foundation of the wall or even near the floor where the water comes from. You can usually find the shut-off valve within three to five feet from the main water entrance or water heater.
No basement in your home? You might find the shut-off valve in a small crawl space such as under the sink or near the water heater, an easily accessible place.
I Know Where the Water Shut Off Valve Is, But How Do I Shut it Off?
There are a couple of different types of water shut off valves. Your valve will either have a round wheel or a handle to shut it off.
With a round wheel shut off valve, just turn the handle clockwise. This may need to be done two or more times to completely shut off the water.
With a handle shut off valve, just turn the handle one quarter until it is parallel to the pipes.
There are a few things to remember after you shut off the water valve. First, turn on the faucets in your sinks and tubs to release any extra water pressure. This will also ensure that you have fully shut the water off.
Next, shut off the power to any electric water heaters or boilers, especially during an emergency. Also, put your gas water heater on the pilot setting and shut off the gas when draining your water heater.
